Ngoc Phan has won $50,000 cash in a national competition run by her mortgage broker, Aussie Home Loans.
The competition has been running over a number of months at dozens of trade expos and local fetes, fairs and markets around the country, with 30,000 entries received over the competition period.
The $50k windfall is a welcome surprise for Ngoc and her partner Linda following a challenging few years.
“When I received the call from Angela, I couldn’t believe that it was real. It was too good to be true and I was in complete disbelief. I’ve never won anything in my life and $50,000 is just incredible! It felt like a dream come true and still does,” Ms Phan said.
The past few years have been challenging for Ngoc’s partner Linda, who was diagnosed with cancer six months after they met. After a long and arduous journey that was taxing physically, emotionally and financially, Linda has now been in remission for over three years, but the side effects from the treatment resulted in her needing a partial shoulder replacement, as well as two total hip replacements.
“I call her my bionic woman! She has recently begun slowly returning to work and we are just making ends meet. This money will open so many doors for us. Linda proposed last year and I said “Yes!” so we would love to get married and have a small wedding eventually. We also plan to put the money towards a home for our little family. We’ve never travelled overseas together and it would be amazing to take Linda to Vietnam to explore my family’s heritage. This money is completely life changing.
“After the trials of the past few years, it’s truly wonderful to finally have something so unbelievably good happen. We cannot thank Aussie Home Loans and the lovely Moorooka team enough,” she added.
Franchisee of Aussie Moorooka, Angela Roberts, was thrilled to learn one of her customers had won the big $50,000 prize.
“When I found out Ngoc had won and she had entered at the St Pius X School Fete I was really happy that someone in our local area would be benefiting from this prize. I had spoken to Ngoc only six weeks ago and she was going to have to put purchasing a home on hold as she was not in a position to save a deposit. Ngoc told me winning this money has changed her life and I am so glad to be part of contributing to that,” Ms Roberts said.
Ms Roberts will be presenting the cheque to Ms Phau on Monday 11 September at 4pm in the Aussie Moorooka store. Ngoc and Linda’s friends will be attending, along with Aussie Moorooka’s community partners.
