There’s so many songs about going on holidays that it has put me in the mood to do some wishful thinking – if I could hop on a short flight somewhere … where would I fly away to?
Come fly with me! Let’s fly… Let’s fly away. Firstly let me just say that I make absolutely no apologies for getting old blue eyes stuck in your head.
I am also proud to declare that I am currently sipping from a coconut as I type this (call it method writing) but enough of my setting the tune to this post (both literally and figuratively) – the question is … where to fly to?
Upon pondering this very question today, I present my top 3 destinations of choice in no particular order:
1. Bali, Indonesia
Alright, I concede that Kuta may be the bogan capital of Bali which could put a lot of people off visiting this little bit of tropical paradise but Bali is so much more than full moon parties in your boardies.
As a big kid at heart I spent a solid 8 awesome hours at Waterbom a couple of summers ago and let me tell you, it was a lot more enjoyable and cheaper than what we have locally here.
But maybe you want to embrace your inner Attenborough instead? If nature’s your thing then Ubud’s Monkey Forest is for you.
However if 5 star dining is more your style you should totally hop on a plane and go check out Ku De Ta in posh Seminyak (Bali’s version of Noosa), it’s what you’d call enak sekali (mouth wateringly good!).
2. Queenstown, New Zealand
Now Peter Jackson raves about the wonders of New Zealand and from first hand experience I gotta say … Queenstown is most definitely worth raving about.
Boasting beautiful scenery and a buzzing village feel, its natural beauty and plethora of activities make it a perfect holiday spot.
Queenstown feels like all the best parts of the Canadian wilderness condensed into a location that’s only a little over 3 hours flight from Sydney (and thankfully lacking man eating bears).
There’s award winning dining (and wining!) for the fancy pants set and for those who like to really get in on a good feed there’s the famous Fergberger (frankly it’s worth flying here for the burgers alone).
Queenstown is also a world class skiing village in winter too if you’re a slope fiend and then don’t forget the other adventure activities at your fingertips like skydiving, bungy jumping, the shotover jet and more!
Did you know! The oldest person to bungy jump at the Kawarau bridge was 94 years old – so there’s definitely adventures to be had by all ages in Queenstown (TWEET THIS!)
Now Vanuatu I’ve been to! Time slows down considerably on the island, a week will feel like a month and the coconuts will be like ambrosia of the gods … if there’s one place I regret leaving at the end of a holiday it’s this piece of paradise.
Sand so fine it’s like talc and seafood so plentiful and delicious it’s a wonder I wasn’t rolled back onto the plane and placed in the hull with the other overweight luggage.
There’s so much to do that you’ll be burdened with choice!
From zorbing, to snorkelling in Champagne Bay (highly recommend it!), deep sea fishing off the reef or duty free shopping in Port Vila – Vanuatu has something to offer everyone. And with 82 picturesque Islands, it’s no wonder that options are a plenty!
With paradise only a few hours within reach you’d be nuts not to jump at the opportunity. So I say grab your passport and meet me at the airport – I’ll be the one in the lounge, coconut in hand, whistling Sinatra. Bon voyage!
So my question to you is – where would you like to fly away to? Tell us where and why in the comments!
