Love or loathe her politics, Altona residents can’t deny that Julia Gillard has certainly put our fair city on the map this week.
Anyone in the main street on Sunday would have been fascinated to see the media scrum of Press Gallery hacks, television cameras and political “hangers-on” asking the Prime Minister probing questions such as: “How are you feeling today?”
How do you think she’s feeling? She wouldn’t be happy, now would she following the election result (or lack of result)?
And like the rest of the country, we here in Altona have been watching the ping-pong game that is being played out in the backrooms of Canberra as we speak.
I’ve known Julia for quite a long time and funnily enough. I’ve been up in a hot-air balloon (hmmmm, hot air and politicians – what does that tell you?) with her and as a former director of the Western Bulldogs, I’ve watched a few matches in her company.
So, will we have a local in The Lodge, or will Tony Abbott gain enough seats (and the support of the independents) to take the nation’s top job? Only time will tell, but here in Altona – we’ll take the exposure while we can.
