For property mad Australians, home shows and exhibitions are the ideal place to gather ideas, get expert advice and purchase essential equipment.
With the ratings for renovation TV shows through the roof in recent years, the spinoff has been the increasing number of home exhibition events we have to choose from.
Some attribute the surge to TV production companies responding to viewers demand to interact with their favourite home improvement stars. However, at the end of the day each event offers a chance for people to get together and discuss their shared passion under one roof.
Whether it is Better Homes and Gardens LIVE, The Block LIVE or Grand Designs LIVE, there is certainly no shortage of (LIVE) exhibitions vying for our attention. This is especially noticeable during the spring selling season, a time when home owners and prospective home buyers are particularly inspired to invest in their property.
I recently spoke to Petra who admits she is something of an expo addict. She’s attended most of the big shows yet says there are plenty she’s still to see.
“I try to get to as many as possible, so I would say I’ve seen maybe 10 in total.”
“I love the ideas and inspiration I get from each stand and the opportunity to buy things I wouldn’t find in my average decorating or hardware store. I also like getting up close and personal with all my favourite TV celebrities – sometimes it’s gardeners and sometimes it’s chefs.”
“There are also plenty of special offers exclusively to people who attend the shows including freebies and giveaways.”
So why are the majority of Australians so fascinated with home improvement?
“With house prices relatively expensive I think people are happy to reinvent what they already have rather than spend a fortune on a new home. I think we love the idea of personalising things particularly if you live in an area where the houses look similar.”
“Home expositions offer us the chance to be inspired, visualise changes and meet TV stars all at once. It’s fantastic!”
