Moving house means big changes, lots of excitement and the potential to overlook the little things that add up to a smooth move. Use our moving checklist to ensure you’ve ticked all the boxes.
One month out
□ Book removalist – shop around for a good price or ask friends/family for referrals
□ Sort unwanted items and either hold a garage sale or take the lot to Vinnies.
□ Start packing. Number each box and keep a written list of the contents of every box.
□ Contact your kids’ new school your kids will attend and discuss enrolment requirements. Advise their current school you’ll be leaving.
□ Speak to utilities providers to arrange a transfer of services to your new home or use this opportunity to shop around for better deal.
□ If you’re switching jobs give your employer notice of intention to leave. Or request a day or two of leave to complete the move.
A fortnight to go
□ Confirm removalist
□ Arrange a mail redirection through Australia Post.
□ Contact insurers. A different postcode may mean an increase in premiums, or you could be owed a refund.
□ Inform your financial institution in writing of your change of address.
One week out from moving day
□ Start cleaning the house
□ Aim to use whatever’s in the fridge, freezer or pantry.
□ Returns book, videos and DVDs to the local library or video store.
□ Make arrangements for children and pets on moving day if necessary.
□ Send out change of address emails to friends and family.
□ Contact your real estate agent to confirm pick-up of keys to the new place.
□ One week to go
□ Pack clothing and personal items needed for the first few days in your new home.
□ Gather all keys for windows, screen doors and the garage. Tag them and arrange to leave them with your selling agent on moving day.
□ Clean the oven, defrost and clean the fridge.
□ Pack items you’ll need overnight in the car.
□ Tick packing boxes off your list as they are loaded onto the removalist’s truck.
□ Leave a note with your forwarding address or contact phone number.
□ Turn off the hot water system, lock up everything as you leave and take one last look around for anything you may have forgotten.
