Goodbye winter, hello spring.
Today is the first day of your new super-organised life. Spring is the perfect time to spring into action and:
- Get organised
- Get your home in order
- Get ahead
Having a hibernation plan will set you up for a relaxing summer and Christmas, which means you can keep your head while all those are losing theirs during Silly Season.
So wipe away winter and prepare for your most organised summer ever with these three simple steps:
1. Clear the deck
The first step is to catch up on all those annoying tasks we’ve let fall by the wayside. I know – there are a lot of them! To make things easier, create a list of the odds and sods you need to get sorted to declutter your home room by room (see checklist).
It will be hard for us to stay on top of things if we let ghosts of to-do-lists past continue to haunt us. So, look at a calendar and assign each week a project. Maybe the next week you spend on the bathroom and the following on the bedroom. Once you get started, you’ll realise it may be easier than you thought.
2. Get your tech life in order
Once you’ve organised your home, the next step is to clean up your digital life. Start with your computer. Look through your Downloads folder and delete anything you don’t need. Then move to your Documents. Group any loose files into folders and archive documents you don’t need.
Now for your photos. If you’re like me and have hundreds of photos sitting in random folders, try to organise them into neat galleries. Make sure you delete any duplicates and be clear with your labelling. “Fun times” is probably not the best (or most specific) title.
When your computer is the picture of order, take the opportunity to back-up your files. You can use a hard drive or a cloud system like Dropbox or iCloud.
This brings us to – wait for it – your inbox. For many of us this seems like too big a task. But all it really takes is a little time. Ideally, we want to delete unnecessary emails and get our unread emails down to 20. This is also a good chance to set up folders, create filters and organise your inbox into work, personal, subscription etc.
3. Maintain the order
Your life – online and offline – should be looking pretty tidy. The trick is keeping it that way! You can do this with some simple planning. Create a master to-do-list to set-up a weekly schedule. As well as your daily to-dos, Christmas shopping and present lists, schedule a time to order and clean your home. Regular spot checks will stop clutter from building back up so you can reap the benefits of a minimalist lifestyle.
