Moving home brings the best and worst of both worlds – the excitement of a fresh environment coupled with a raft of tasks that must be completed before you can enjoy your new surrounds.
Below are several tips to help ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible.
Draft a to-do list
A ‘to-do’ list is a mover’s best friend. Itemising everything that needs to be done will ensure nothing is overlooked.
Start with the tasks needed to make your new home habitable. This includes arranging furniture removal and setting a date to have utilities connected – you may be able to transfer your existing account from the old property to the new one.
Take out home and contents insurance for the new property and think about whether you need to organise childcare or someone to mind pets on moving day.
Next, inform financial institutions about your new address. This includes your regular bank, credit card issuer, home loan provider and super fund. Organise a mail redirection with Australia Post, and if you’re renting, contact the property manager to arrange a final inspection to recoup the bond.
What to pack, sell or offload
As moving day approaches, start packing. Boxes can be hired from self-storage providers if your removalist doesn’t supply them. Number and label each box with a brief description of the contents. Keep a checklist of all boxes. Holding a garage sale is a great way to not only get rid of unwanted items, but turn them into extra cash.
With just 24 hours to go before moving day, defrost your fridge and freezer, put out the garbage and email friends and family confirming your new address.
Once everything is packed onto the removal truck, take a few minutes to inspect your old home and check nothing has been left behind.
All that remains now is to settle in, explore the local community and enjoy your new home.
